Training News by Chief Instructor, Stefan Bagg

Okay it’s that time of year again when our thoughts return to training for the upcoming season. While most of you where blissfully ignorant of the winter weather down at the clubhouse, some of us have been busy getting awards that can’t be done during the patrolling season. Awards like our Silver Medallion IRB Crew & Driver, Silver Medallion Beach Management, the Bronze Medallion Trainer or Assessor and our own recently developed version of the Water Safety Officers course. However several key dates are now looming ahead for the vast majority of our members who just can’t wait to get back into it!

 Proficiencies

First up is our annual requalification, or proficiency day, which will again be held at 9:30am on the first Saturday of December (06/12/08). Every member who currently holds any of the following awards must requalify on this day including:

  •  Surf Rescue Certificate (including all qualified cadets and all previous Water Safety Officers)

  •  Bronze Medallion Award (but you must also have already completed your CII in Public Safety – Aquatic Rescue)

  •  Advanced Resuscitation Certificate

  •  IRB Crew or Driver (complete a logbook of hours as determined from IRB Patrol Log and current Vic Boat license for drivers)

  •  Or any holders of CPR, Oxygen, or Spinal awards not covered above.

You can download the appropriate open-book exam papers from our site, which you should complete and bring along on the day. You must also register your intention to requalify at least 2 weeks prior to the date (or Fri 21st Nov) otherwise you cannot be entered onto the Australia-wide registration system in time to qualify. This can be done in either of the following ways:

  1. Print and return the attached Intention to Requalify form to:

Stefan Bagg
Chief Instructor SLSC Vic
c/- Sorrento SLSC
PO Box 395
Sorrento VIC 3943

  1. Or fill it out, save it, then email as attachment  to:

 All Terrain Vehicle (ATV)

Following the conclusion of the requals, at about 2.30pm we will be holding a an ATV (“Gator”) Operators training session. You must be over 18yrs with a current Vic driver’s license to be eligible. Only club certified operators will be allowed to drive the Gator – so if you are interested please register your details with Andy Nettlefold adnett@westnet.com.au before Fri 28th Nov.

Bronze Medallion

Firstly the club’s 2008-2009 Bronze Medallion program is about to start. If you are interest please email your details to Duncan Stirling, duncan.stirling@sorrentoslsc.com by Friday 14th November.

Other Training

Two other programs of interest include the Advanced Resuscitation Certificate (ARC) and the IRB Crew awards. Generally we hold off on these until all our Bronzies have gone through their training but tentative dates have been set. For the ARC, enrolment date is Fri 7th Dec to start on Sat 15th Dec. For all enquiries and details please contact Marc Clavin via email, marc.clavin@sorrentoslsc.com  For the IRB Crew send an email to stefb-ozzie@hotmail.com before Sun 9th Dec.

 Finally

If you need another copy of the requal form or you want to check the training calendar for any other upcoming opportunities then please refer to our website to view or download the current versions. For further inquiries regarding training please email me via stefb-ozzie@hotmail.com and I will attempt to get back to you as soon as I can. Meanwhile get training and good luck!
